Drill-Less Dentistry
Dr. Johansen is one of the first dentists in the Salt Lake Valley to provide a procedure known as "hydroabrasion" with the Aquacut Quattro. Hydroabrasion is a procedure in which some cavities can be prepared without a drill and at times without the need for local anesthesia. It works by emitting a stream of abrasive particles surrounded by a curtain of water. This slurry abrades the damaged and decayed tooth structure instead of "drilling" it away. There is no direct contact with tooth structure and there is no vibration, turbine noise or smell that is generally associated with dental procedures.
This is not a procedure that can be performed for every cavity that needs to be done. But when the situation is appropriate, hydroabrasion is amazingly quick and painless way in which we can repair teeth.
